TSEN, in partnership
with EAPN and LVSTC, continued the series of regional events building
momentum for the formal launch of the year in March 2010. London
has the highest proportion of households in the bottom tenth of
incomes nationally and those in temporary accommodation, ten times
higher than national average. London also has the highest rate of
income poverty of any other region in England (after housing costs).
Further information on the ‘Poverty Profile
of London’ was presented by the City Parochial Foundation.
Attended by over 140 participants, the event enjoyed speeches by
Stephen Timms MP (East Ham), Financial Secretary for the Treasury
and Jean Lambert MEP, Green Party Member of the European Parliament
for London.
In addition there were ‘voices from the ground
up’ presentations from local organisations who promote
social inclusion such as the Need not Greed campaign (‘myth
busting’), Migrants Resource Centre (giving a voice to migrants
in London), End Child Poverty London and the Leonard Cheshire Disability,
(working to tackle exclusion and enable access for disabled people).
The day closed with an interactive ‘buzz’ session to
develop ideas and action to eradicate poverty.
To download the presentations and speeches from
the day see link below. The series of events will continue in February
2010 in the South West (Weston Super-mare),
in partnership with our member South West Regional Forum.
